2020 5K & Fun Run - UPDATE
Thank you for being a part of our fantastic and supportive O'Connell community! We hope you and your family are safe and well during these unprecedented times.
After consulting with O'Connell's administration and looking at best practices from other community races, we have made the difficult decision to not reschedule this race. We are disappointed to miss the camaraderie, togetherness and community spirit we would have shared at an in-person event, but we are moving forward to still support the school and inclusive education.
Here's How You Can Still Participate
Run or walk in the VIRTUAL Better Together 5K & Fun Run - Any day of the week, any time of day, run or walk a 5K (3.1 miles) in the name of O'Connell and you've completed the virtual Better Together 5K & Fun Run. You can complete your virtual race in your neighborhood, on a treadmill or on a local trail (don't forget to practice safe social-distancing). Let us know you've crossed your personal finish line by May 1 and we'll send you our official finisher medal. We may not be able to do the race together - but we can all participate virtually to support one of our favorite causes - expanded services and inclusive education. Click here to let us know you've completed the race. (Bonus points for sending us a photo!)
Change your participation level from runner to donor - If you're not in a position to run now, you can change your race registration to a donation to O'Connell. If you select this option, we will issue you a tax receipt indicating no goods or services were exchanged. Email us at 5Krace@bishopoconnell.org to select this option.
Are there t-shirts?
Unfortunately, no. We received notice from Arlington County on March 13 that event permits were being rescinded. At that point we were optimistic that we could change the date and print shirts for a future in-person race. When we made the decision to move to a virtual race, the t-shirt design, production and distribution costs became prohibitive.
We did, however, order a number of 2020 finisher medals (in February) and we will make those available to participants in the virtual race.
What does this mean for volunteers?
At this point, we are unable to honor volunteer opportunities/hours. If you signed up to help out at our race, we sincerely thank you for wanting to be a part of our community and we hope to see you in 2021 when we are back together in person.
Are refunds available?
When you signed up as a runner in the O'Connell 5K, we all had every expectation of working and celebrating together. We hope you'll now consider your registration fee as your entry to the virtual race for which you'll receive our finisher medal or as a donation to the school (earmarked for expanded services and inclusive education initiatives). If your circumstances are such that you can't reasonably consider either option, please email Laura Friel at firstname.lastname@example.org by May 1, 2020 so we can work together on a solution.
Please feel free to contact us at 5Krace@bishopoconnell.org.
Thank you for all that you do for the O'Connell community. We look forward to the day when we can all be back together again!
