New Parent Orientation Series

Welcome to the O'Connell family! We encourage parents of new students to join us for four different orientation sessions that are spread over the next several months.

Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. - Part 1 (Charge Up!)
Tuesday, June 18, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. - Part 2 (Nuts and Bolts)
Thursday, August 8, 2024 at 7:00 p.m.- Part 3 (What to Expect)

The sessions above are presented in a live webinar format, which are recorded. Parents who are unable to attend the virtual sessions, will have access to the slides and recording after the event.

Aug./Sep. 2024 (Date TBD) - Parent Like a Champion. This is an in-person required workshop for parents of students who plan to participate in any sport. Parents who have older students and have already participated in this program are not required to attend a second time.

Placement Information

Math

All students currently taking Algebra 1 or Geometry must take the Diocesan Algebra Exemption Exam at Bishop O’Connell on Saturday, June 1 at 9:00 a.m. No pre-registration needed. The exam is about 90 minutes long. If your student has accommodations and extended time please have them tell the proctor. Enter at Door #1 (across from the flagpole).

Make up Date: Saturday, June 8 at 9:00 a.m.

World Languages

Spring 2024 - The World Language placement test will take place on either Tuesday, May 7 or Wednesday, May 15 at 3:00 p.m. at Bishop O’Connell. Any non-diocesan student who would like to take a language level 2 or higher next year at O'Connell must take a test. Any student who is a heritage Spanish speaker (who speaks Spanish at home) is asked to come for a short interview and written test. Please bring a number two pencil for the test. The test itself takes between 45 -60 minutes. Students may leave as soon as they finish the test.

Students who attend a diocesan school will be taking the test at their K-8 school during school hours on Tuesday, May 15 or another day that week. If they would like to be placed in the Spanish Heritage speaker program, they are asked to come to O'Connell during the placement testing on 5/7 or 5/15 to complete the interview and potentially complete an additional writing test for proper placement.

Please note - Any student who is a heritage Spanish or French speaker is asked to come for a short interview and/or written test on one of those two days.

All German students, including heritage speakers, require a separate test to be scheduled directly with our German faculty. Use the form below to indicate you need the exam and the Department Chair will be in contact with you to schedule the exam.
