March 9, 2018 NVSHL CHAMPIONS! The Varsity Ice Hockey Team took home the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League (NVSHL) title for the first time since 2009! O'Connell faced undefeated Broad Run in the championship game and won 4-2. The team was very talented this year and filled with young guys, making next year's season exciting and hopeful for another great season! Read more about the championship game and season stats here. Also a special congratulations to Coach Flip Collins and his wife, Rachel, on the birth of their daughter Cannon- DJO's newest and youngest fan :)
Varsity Softball Nationally Ranked Going into 2018 Season The O'Connell Lady Knights are currently ranked #10 on the USA Today Sports/NFCA High School Super 25 Poll! Good luck this year ladies! Interested in the softball polls? Check them out. All-American Award Winner Senior Grace Marinaro received the All-American Award for her leadership in the Summer Academy and her extraordinary academic and athletic performance during her four years at DJO. She was selected from an applicant pool of 10,000 students, and is truly a scholar athlete! She's participated in soccer, swim and dive, lacrosse and track during her 4 years at O'Connell, and has a perfect 4.0 GPA. Congratulations Grace!
Varsity Basketball VISAA Tournament Results The Boys Varsity Basketball team started off the VISAA tournament with a bang! In the quarter-final game vs. Episcopal High School, the Knights won 57-56 and advanced to the semi-finals down in Richmond over the windy weekend. After winning 82-71 over Trinity Episcopal in the semi-finals, they faced rival PVI yet again in the championship game, and unfortunately lost. But the Knights are not done yet! DJO got a bid into the prestigious Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament this weekend held at Frostburg State University. Good luck Knights! The Girls Varsity Basketball team also went down to Richmond for the VISAA tournament and had an interesting weekend as they played through multiple power outages during their games! They beat Trinity Episcopal in the quarter-final 53-33, and unfortunately lost to PVI as well in the semi-finals.
DJO Figure Skater Competes at Nationals Congratulations to junior Nicole Berry who is a member of the DC EDGE synchronized skating club! She is a three year member of the club's Novice team, which placed 4th at the Eastern Sectional competition last month, qualifying them to compete at the U.S. National Synchronized Skating Championship in late February in Portland, Oregon. Her team finished in 10th place at the national competitions, and Nicole is already looking forward to improving on that for next year. As a dedicated figure skater, Nicole rises most mornings by 5 a.m. for individual practice, and also practices with her team two to three times a week at three different ice rinks around the beltway.
