A lot of "oohs and ahhs" were dished out as the Varsity Field Hockey Team and the Girls Soccer teams took a ride in our new bus! To go along with their sweet ride last Saturday, the Varsity Field Hockey ladies won their game vs. Brookewood School 2-0!

A special thank you to Athletics Boosters and all the donors who contributed to this great addition to the athletics department!

Reservations and trips will be determined by specific team usage throughout the year and distance traveled... Don't worry, all teams will get an opportunity to ride the bus!

Game 3 vs. Collegiate Cougars, Sep. 15

After a rainy week, the Knights took on a good Cougars team that was the runner-up to Flint Hill last season for the state championship. O'Connell's defense struggled to get the Cougars off the field in key situations, the offense failed to convert on downs on a couple of occasions, and penalties killed a lot of the drives offensively. Despite a tough game, the Knights didn't give up and fought their hardest to stay in the game. Samadani managed to tally the only score for the Knights on a deep pass from McGowan for the senior-to-senior connection.  Final score was 7-38 in favor of the Cougars. #BringtheHammer #ontothenextone

Game 4 vs. Blue Ridge Barons, Sep. 22

The Knights came out on fire and scored on their first drive of the game and never looked back! With 362 total yards, including 260 rushing, Darius Brown ran for 138 yards earning one touchdown, Kai Bowers rushed 100 yards with two touchdowns on the ground, and Rodney Jackson rushed for 20 yards. Quarterback, Aidan McGowan was 7 of 11 passing for 102 yards, with two touchdown passes of 22 and 21 yards to Jalen Haggler and another of 10 yards to Jahmal Banks, who had four catches for 47 yards. In addition, kicker Cole Jackson was 5 for 5 on extra points and a 31-yard field goal and Sebastian Cognetti had one PAT conversion. O'Connell's defense was a brick, holding the Barons to 147 total yards. Banks had an interception return of 32 yards. Haggler had two quarterback hurries, an interception, and a fumble recovery. While Brown, Jackson, and Hunter Pena recorded tackles for loss, among several others. Final score was 45-6, tallying the Knights first win of the season!

The Knights are headed to Richmond to take on the St. Christopher Saints this Saturday. GO, KNIGHTS!! #BringtheHammer

Girls Soccer Beat PVI Panthers!

On Tuesday, Sep. 25 both Varsity and JV Girls Soccer swept PVI with great wins! The Varsity Lady Knights won 3-1, with a goal from Kendall McBride '20 and two goals from Lilly Neubauer '21. MVPs of the game were Maggie McDonough '19 with her dynamite defense, and Lilly Neubauer for scoring and putting immense pressure on the Panther defense. This is the first time the DJO Seniors (pictured left) have beaten PVI in their four years, great jobs girls!

For JV, after trailing 1-0 in the first half, Emma Cunningham '21 scored two goals and Erin Garvert '22 added a third goal to win the game 3-2! Great job, ladies!

DJO Sailing in DC and Rochester, NY

Sailing in the yellow life jacket is O'Connell skipper Gabe Paier '21.

On Sep. 16, the Varsity squad hosted a 2v2 Team Race event at DC Sail (our home marina). As opposed to Fleet Racing, team racing is sailed with two boats on a team competing collectively against another team, utilizing racing and right of way rules of sailing to outsail the other team. It's quite aggressive! Gabe was the sole varsity representative from O'Connell to race (and it was his first time team racing) at this event!

Accompanied by DC Sail Coach Abby White, Colman Schofield (DC Sail) from Yorktown High School, Friso Grolleman from Bethesda Chevy Chase High, and Peter Lobaugh (pictured on right in white) from DJO traveled to Rochester Yacht Club on Lake Ontario to compete in a Laser Regatta. The laser is a different class of boat and is sailed by a single sailor, as opposed to the DC Sail team boats, called FJ's, that take two people to sail.

Alumni Spotlight

Field hockey player and DJO alumna, Olivia Barksdale '15, was the first player from O'Connell to be chosen for the WCAC all conference team and was a captain for the Lady Knights. At Clark University in Massachusetts, Barksdale is still showcasing her field hockey skills with two goals and one assist for five points so far this season. Her team's record is currently 3-0.

This year, O'Connell has nine athletes who will be training for two Special Olympic Development Teams in soccer and basketball.
