Christian Service

Christian Service at Bishop O'Connell aims to cultivate a lifelong habit of serving & giving to others.

To serve as Christians, we follow the teachings and example of Jesus Christ in the Gospels. Jesus served & encountered others throughout his public ministry, in particular the poor, vulnerable and marginalized.

Bishop O'Connell students are asked to perform a minimum of 10 hours of service like Christ & for Christ each year. To imitate Jesus through our work, the guidelines for qualifying Christian Service hours at Bishop O'Connell focus on the Corporal Works of Mercy, which are given to us by Jesus in Matthew 25:35-40. This passage outlines standard ways to serve people in need: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, care for the sick, visit the imprisoned, bury the dead, instruct the ignorant (spiritual work: to pass on the faith).

Bishop O'Connell students are welcome to volunteer in other ways and are encouraged to become active members in our community. The guidelines should not prevent students from participating in other activities. However, not all forms of volunteering and not everything done during free time will count as Christian Service.

Christian Service is an annual academic requirement at Bishop O'Connell. Failure to complete Christian Service is a failure to complete the academic year. Christian Service hours may be claimed for the current school year for service performed starting the day after the previous school year ended. Surplus hours are not applied forward to future years.
