The O’Connell Knights have a long history of success in Cross-Country. Several of our runners have competed at the college level after graduating from DJO. We are always looking for new runners to join our team; we welcome athletes in all grades, from incoming freshmen to rising seniors. If you are interested in joining, and haven’t already signed up, please email Coach Jim Connor.

The 2025 fall season was one of the best the Bishop O'Connell Knights ever have enjoyed in boys cross country. The Knights ended this year's fall campaign by winning the VISAA Division I state championship for the first time since 2000.
Boys Cross-Country is a no-cut sport, but we expect that runners joining our team can run two miles without stopping at the time official practice begins in August.
Summer running: Each of our athletes will receive suggested workouts each week during the summer. These workouts are designed to build each runner’s endurance for the races this Fall.
Cross-Country races are usually run on courses that are 5 kilometers in length and that have a variety of terrain and surfaces—for example, hills, grass, or gravel.
Meets are usually on Saturdays, but we have a few meets on weekdays. The meet schedule will be announced around the time that team practices begin.
We compete in three championship meets—the Arlington County Championship, the WCAC Championship, and the Virginia Independent Schools State Championship.
Our team goals are:
That all athletes work hard at practice and improve over the course of the season.
That we perform at the highest level possible in our championship meets.
That all athletes have an enjoyable season.
