Emergencies/Referrals
Athletes should report all significant injuries to their coach and to the athletic trainer. Parents will be called for an injury requiring emergency transportation. For injuries that are not emergencies, but need to be seen by a physician, parents may be called and/or a “Injury Treatment Instructions” form and a “Physician’s Report” form will be sent home with the athlete. Athletes can also be seen by the sports medicine fellow at school.
Return After Injury
Virginia law requires an athletic trainer to work under the direction of a physician. When an athlete has been evaluated by a physician he/she must bring to the athletic trainer a note from the physician. This is necessary for the athletic trainer to provide follow up care and to advise the coach about the athlete’s playing status. Athletes should continue follow up care and treatment until the injury is completely healed.
