Athletic Training - Policies

Before participating in sports at O’Connell, students must turn in a current physical exam form (dated after April 1st) and a parent consent form to Mr. Tillson. These are requested at least one week prior to team tryouts to allow time for processing.

A physical is also required for anyone participating in any out of season program organized by O'Connell coaches. This includes pre-season conditioning, open gym, summer leagues, etc. Physicals from the last calendar year are acceptable.

Athletes should report all significant injuries to their coach and to the athletic trainer. Parents will be called for an injury requiring emergency transportation. For injuries that are not emergencies, but need to be seen by a physician, parents may be called and/or a “Injury Treatment Instructions” form and a “Physician’s Report” form will be sent home with the athlete. Athletes can also be seen by the sports medicine fellow at school.

Return After Injury
Virginia law requires an athletic trainer to work under the direction of a physician. When an athlete has been to a physician he/she must bring to the athletic trainer the “Physician’s Report” form or a note from the physician. This is necessary for the athletic trainer to provide follow up care and to advise the coach about the athlete’s playing status. Athletes should keep coming for follow up care until the injury is completely healed.
