Summer Study Abroad in Spain

Summer Study Abroad in Spain

Eleven students from Bishop O’Connell traveled this summer with Spanish Program Director, Faryde Yanine, to the University of Salamanca in Spain for a two-week study abroad program, earning college credits.

The students began their experience with a placement test to determine the appropriate level for their immersive studies in Spanish language, literature, culture, business, cooking, and flamenco. The program offered a dynamic balance of rigorous academics in the mornings and cultural excursions in the afternoons. Guided by professors from the University of Salamanca, students explored significant landmarks, including the city’s cathedrals, museums, and the historic university buildings.

On the weekends, students traveled to several major cities: Bilbao, where they visited the Guggenheim Museum and explored the historic city center; Burgos, home to the iconic Burgos Cathedral, associated with the legendary figure El Cid;Toledo, known for its rich history and connection to the famous painter El Greco and famous Cathedral; and Madrid, where they toured El Prado Museum, visited the House of Velázquez featured in Las Meninas, and admired Picasso’s Guernica at the Reina Sofía Museum.

Other highlights included walks in Salamanca to the Plaza Mayor to enjoy the local food and the monuments in the streets, and a flamenco show.

The University of Salamanca is Yanine’s alma mater. It is one of the oldest universities in the world. Built in 1218, it quickly became a center of learning in Europe, rivaling institutions like Bologna, the Sorbonne, and Oxford. “Teaching Spanish culture this summer at my alma mater was a truly meaningful experience,” she said. “It felt like coming home and being part of history.”

“After this journey, my students return as global ambassadors, enriched by language, culture, and a broader world perspective,” said  Señora Yanine. “The University of Salamanca program provided an unforgettable academic and cultural experience for our students.”
