Congratulations to our Bishop O'Connell spring sports teams that demonstrated remarkable accomplishments, steady growth and unwavering school spirit throughout the season. We are proud of these student-athletes and celebrate all our Knights!
Baseball - The baseball team enjoyed as much success as any Bishop O'Connell team during the spring by winning the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference postseason tournament for the first time in 25 years, then reaching the semifinals of the Division I state tournament. With many standout players, O'Connell had an impressive 27-7 overall record, which were the most wins in a season since 2001.
Softball - O'Connell amassed another strong season by finishing with a 16-5 overall record, taking second in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference tournament and reaching the semifinals of the Division I state tournament. O'Connell has played in the WCAC tourney championship game for 23 straight seasons. Two O'Connell players were chosen first-team Division I all-state.
Outdoor Track and Field - In the spring outdoor season the O'Connell girls and boys teams each finished second at the Virginia Catholic State Championships, with the boys second and the girls third at the longstanding Draper Invitational meet. Plus, there were many team record setters and top performance in various events, like the relays.
Boys Golf - O'Connell won five dual matches against Washington Catholic Athletic Conference high-school opponents and had a 12-4 overall record. Individual scoring was consistent by the players throughout the season. In the final WCAC tournament, O'Connell finished fourth.
Girls Golf - In dual matches O'Connell amassed an 8-4 overall record, including a 5-2 mark against Washington Catholic Athletic Conference rivals. The team also finished fourth in the WCAC and fifth in the two-year-old Washington Area Girls Golf League tournaments. The Knights did all of that in what head coach Eric Ruff also called a strong rebuilding and transitional season.
Boys Lacrosse - O'Connell won eight matches and two of its losses were by one goal, with one of those setbacks in overtime. With an experienced roster that included 16 seniors, three who earned all-conference honors, the Knights continued to make progress during the spring with another solid season.
Girls Lacrosse - O'Connell defeated Holy Cross for the first time under head coach Leah Brennan and continued to make positive progress since she took over that position four seasons ago. The Knights finished with a 7-7 overall record. The team was led by senior captain Caitlin Musolino, who scored 69 goals and had 28 assists.
Crew - The Bishop O'Connell Knights had a couple of boats reach the semifinals at highly-regarded season-ending regattas. Prior to those events, one O'Connell boat finished second and another third at the Washington Metropolitan Interscholastic Rowing Association championships.
Sailing - The top highlight of the spring sailing season came when the varsity boat placed third at the two-day Mid-Atlantic Regional Varsity Finals event. The O'Connell entry raced against 13 other sailing teams from New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. O'Connell had a schedule that included competitions on eight different dates.
Boys Tennis - With a young team that included just two seniors and six freshmen, O'Connell still managed to defeat a trio of Washington Catholic Athletic Conference rivals. Those three matches O'Connell won were against Bishop McNamara and St. Mary's Ryken and St. John's. "We played a difficult schedule and we hung in there well against the other teams," O'Connell coach Eric Parson said.
