O’Connell senior Nick Appel signed his Letter of Intent to play football at the University of North Carolina in the presence of his coaches, parents and fellow teammates, Thursday, Feb. 4.
Earlier this year, Nick was named co-defensive player of the year by the Arlington Sun Gazette. According to Coach Jim Hayes, Nick didn't play organized football until he entered O'Connell as a freshman. Nonetheless, it was clear early on that he had the right temperament and size to be a serious contributor to the offensive line. "Nick exemplifies everything you want in a student athlete," says Hayes. "He has an incredible work ethic; and because of this, he will be very successful in life, no matter what he does."
