Posted 02/02/2010 02:17PM

On January 23, 2010 at a special recognition ceremony of the John Lyon - VFW Post 3150, several O'Connell students and one teacher were recognized for their accomplishments this year.

Catherine McNulty, a faculty member at Bishop O'Connell for the past 19 years, received the VFW State High School Teacher of the Year Award for her outstanding dedication to citizenship education in the classroom and in the community. She had first recieved the award at the local and district level, and was honored to be awarded this state recognition. Now her name will be submitted for consideration at the national level.

At the same award ceremony, O'Connell students were recognized as winners in the Post 3150 Voice of Democracy essay contest. This year's theme for the recorded essays was: "Does America Still Have Heroes?"

O'Connell junior Vitale Christy won first place and $500; junior Sarah McCarthy won second place and $300; senior Carolina Von Goihman recieved $75 and honorable mention.

Mrs. Mary Lou Wentzel who coordinates these essay submissions was thrilled to see such a successful showing by O'Connell students. "I encourage our students to enter these contests each year, and I am always amazed at the quality of their submissions. I am proud of all of our students, and equally proud of Ms. McNulty for this great honor."
