Spring practices are just beginning and already there are great expectations for the Bishop O’Connell softball team. This year the Lady Knights go for a 10th straight Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) championship while also seeking their 17th Virginia Independent Schools State title in 19 years competing. Since the formation of the WCAC in 1994, the DJO girls have dominated – winning 16 championships and during one stretch (1999 to 2008) posting 121 consecutive victories in regular season play. Just as impressive, O’Connell owns a 55-2 record overall in VISSA state tournament play.
Coming off a 27-1 mark and a #5 ranking nationally in the final NFCA/USA Today High School Poll a year ago, O’Connell finds itself ranked #3 in the country in the MaxPreps preseason Top 50 poll going into the 2013 campaign.
The Knights return with their All-Americans battery back for their senior seasons – pitcher Tori (pictured top left) and catcher Jillian Ferraro (pictured below). Finucane posted a 27-1 record with a 0.09 earned run average and 332 strikeouts on the year. Ferraro, a three-time 1st Team All-Met, is coming off a season in which she hit .542 with 55 runs batted in and 21 extra base hits (nine doubles, four triples, eight home runs). Both were named 1st Team All-Americans by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
Other mainstays in this year’s lineup promise to be Hayley Metcalf (.488 batting average), Amanda Ehlers (.438) and Mary Burk (.310) with newcomers Olivia Giaquinto and Jenna Spille expected to contribute right away.
