Papal Pilgrimage 2015
A Message from the Chaplain
For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)
The heart of the mission of Bishop O’Connell High School is to be a place to encounter Jesus Christ. Campus Ministries provides opportunities for our students to experience the presence of Jesus in the Blessed Eucharist, to experience His healing power in the sacrament of Reconciliation, and to enter into a relationship with Him in personal prayer. It is my hope and vision for the ministry of the Chaplain’s office that every student will find the chapel and the chaplain’s office a place of profound contact with the living God which will inspire them to heed the call of Christ to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…” (Matthew 28:19)
Our last three popes, St. John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI, and Pope Francis have called us to engage in the New Evangelization. To be an evangelist means to strive for personal holiness and to be an effective witness to the Gospel. I hope that the ministry of the chaplain’s office will help every student become an effective witness to the love of God in Christ Jesus and be equipped to go forth into the world to transform our culture from a culture of death to a culture of life and love.
Many students will also need a place to feel understood in times of difficulty and crisis. Jesus says “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." (Matthew 11:28-30) I hope that when any student is in difficulty, the chaplain’s office can be of spiritual support to those students who find themselves in crisis.
As the chaplain, I desire to be available to every student and be a bridge to Christ. I hope that through my ministry—in conjunction with the work of our dedicated faculty—each student will have the opportunity to become closer to God and experience the profound joy of the Gospel. May the Blessed Virgin Mary intercede for you and for your family so that you too may experience the love of God in Christ Jesus.
