Cross Country Shows Speed at DCXC Invitational

O'Connell Cross Country ran exceptionally well at the 4th annual DCXC Invitational located at Kenilworth Park in the NE section of Washington, DC. As runners followed a challenging 5K loop course, our DJO Knights were unstoppable! The freshman boys team placed 3rd out of 16 teams with Joey Markowicz earning a medal for 20th place (time of 19.02)! The freshman girls team also put up a fight coming in 5th out of 15 teams with Tess Brinkmann as Runner Up in 2nd place (20.34)! Our senior girls placed 7th out of 16 teams with Ryley Howard (pictured top left) earning a medal for 7th place (19.44). She is currently  ranked #1 in the WCAC and #3 in the VISAA! And to top off the great results is junior Max Greczyn (pictured bottom left) who placed 1st (15:48). Coach Cindy Walls commented "Max's time with a 5:05/mile pace was the fastest time run by an O'Connell male since I have been coaching at O'Connell, perhaps much longer"... and she's been coaching for 13 years! Max is currently ranked #17 in the state, #1 in the WCAC and #1 in VISAA! Check out his cool interview here.

Varsity Football Crushes Ireton 42-6!

Varsity Head Coach Colin Disch gives a game recap against Bishop Ireton last Saturday:
"What a great game! The O'Connell Knights started fast by scoring on a 59 yard pass on the 1st offensive play. We had 2 weeks to prepare for this game and it paid off. Our timing and execution were in sync, and the Knights had over 200 yards on the ground. We took an early 14-0 lead on a 33 yard touchdown run. The defense was strong all day creating 5 turnovers. Ireton was just 3 for 12 on 3rd downs and were losing steam quick. O'Connell added two more TD's for a lead of 28-0 at halftime. Saturday was an unusually hot September day and forced our players to need additional rest. This gave an opportunity for other players to step up and perform. It was truly a team win and The Knights won 42-6! The O-Zone was rocking and thank you to the fans and parents that came out to support us and help us celebrate this win!"

The Varsity Football team is traveling to Benedictine this Friday Sep. 29 for a game time of 4:15 p.m., wish them luck!

Crew Competes at First Regatta of The Year

Last Sunday, DJO Crew had a stellar performance at their very first race of the year! The Schuller's Head of the Potomac Regatta was a 2.8 mile course along the Georgetown Waterfront and it was a beautiful day on the Potomac for the Knights.

DJO Crew raced an 8-man boat entirely made up of seniors (pictured top right). They placed 8th out of 26 boats! All but one of the boats ahead of DJO were from Club Teams, meaning that among high schools, DJO placed 3rd!

The men also raced three 4-man boats, which placed 5th (pictured bottom), 8th, and 14th out of 16 boats. Again, many clubs were entered in this category, making our placement among high schools 2nd, 3rd, and 5th!

The women's team raced two 4-boats, with the first varsity boat placing 1st (pictured middle), and the second varsity boat placing 11th out of 14! The women also placed 12th out of 22 boats in the 8-boat category- which put them at 3rd among high school boats!

Congratulations DJO Crew. We look forward to seeing what you got on the water this year!

Friendly Competition for a Good Cause

On Sep 25th, the Field Hockey team and the Ice Hockey team participated in the first annual Fire and Ice competition. The teams competed against each other in a full, refereed game of field hockey, where the Field Hockey girls beat the boys Ice Hockey 4-2! The friendly and fun event raised over $500 to support the fight against cystic fibrosis, and the donation will be given to the Superdance in March. Thank you O'Connell students, athletes, parents and staff for supporting this great cause and as always. What a Great Day to Be a Knight!

Come support your varsity Field Hockey players at their next home game this Saturday, Sep. 30 at 5:15 p.m.
