Fall Sports Retreat Recap

For the past couple of years, O'Connell Athletics has initiated a sports retreat at the beginning of each season to focus on spiritual guidance and to teach the principles behind Play Like A Champion Today. This year's fall retreat consisted of a student witness talk by junior Maggie McDonough, and a discussion with Father Thompson about decisions that we have to make about sports and life. Following these talks were breakout sessions, which included group discussion on how decisions affect academic, spiritual, social, and athletic experiences, as well as fellow teammates. Another breakout session was introduced to focus on team building and the challenges associated with working as a team. The retreat concluded with a wonderful Mass led by Father Thompson. Thank you to Father Thompson, Coach Wootten, Maggie McDonough, and all the athletes and their coaches for a fun and meaningful retreat!

Royalettes Diaper Drive Success

The Royalette Dance Team would like to thank everyone who donated to the Diaper Drive! A total of 5,192 diapers were donated to the Texas Diaper Bank supporting the families in Houston effected by Hurricane Harvey. The Dance team was able to connect with Ask Gina & Company and My Guys Moving & Storage to have the diapers transported to Texas. If you would like more information on what these companies are doing for hurricane relief efforts, just click their names!

Great Reads for Parents

Former record-holding Iowa State wrestler and current Head Coach for the Penn State wrestling team, Cael Sanderson took his Nittany Lions to win six NCAA Championships- and he's not done. But it's not about the success he's had that makes him a great coach, it's how he conducts his program; and with that he does with gratitude.Read about what Coach Sanderson thinks about gratitude and how it is a fundamental for building a better athlete and person as a whole.

As your athletes are growing up and maturing, it can be difficult to parent a teen athlete. High costs of athletics, the competition, drama, and life balances all change and impact the athlete as well as the parents. Here's 6 facts for parenting a teen athlete!

Positive Parenting- The Ride Home and what is talked about after the game makes a big impression on your athlete's performance and relationship with you, the parent. Many athletes dread the ride home because they often report getting yelled at for what they did and didn't do, officials calls that were wrong, and so on.Click here for a short video from Play Like a Champion Today on tips and ways to support and encourage your athlete on the ride home!

O'Connell had a fabulous time at the Endless Summer High School Tournament in Virginia Beach last weekend! This is the largest high school tournament on the east coast with 100 teams from 6 different states competing. Head Coach Mehdi commented: "Since our team is young, this tournament was a fun way for them to bond as a team and gain more experience playing with each other." DJO Volleyball came in 1st place in the Silver Division with a record of 4-1! Great job girls and we will see you on the court!
