2016-2017 Athletics Wrap Up
As the school year is coming to an end, we'd like to take the time to thank all the coaches, staff, and parents for putting in countless hours to make O'Connell Athletics excel. We know your schedules are hectic and without you, our sports teams simply wouldn't exist. So a big THANK YOU to you as you put up with our wonderful athletes on a daily basis and at home!
We've had a year full of rebuilding, excitement, and some heartbreak losses, but in the end our athletes played their hearts out. This year, we welcomed new coaches to crew, field hockey, football, boys lacrosse, swimming, and wrestling. With that being said, we've improved in every sport and every season. Let's take a look at the athletes that stood out this year!

Determination Leads to Success
O'Connell Crew entered eight boats in the State Championship Regatta, ultimately showing strength and bringing home four gold medals and two silver medals. Both the Boys and Girls teams are State Champions! And to add to the excitement, four out of the eight boats qualified for the SRAA National Championship Regatta.
On May 24, the O'Connell Crew team took four boats to Camden, NJ for the SRAA National Championship Regatta. Our men's Junior 4+ boat made it into the semi-finals and they needed to take 1st, 2nd, or 3rd to advance. They came in 0.5 seconds behind 3rd place... What a heart-breaker! The DJO Crew team took this home as a motivation to work harder for next year! O'Connell Athletics and the crew coaches are very proud of each and ever member of the crew team!
Teen Cancer America Flag Football Tournament
Teen Cancer America is a charity devoted to transforming the lives of teenager and young adults with cancer. Sophomores Molly Cacci, Maddie Fleenor, and Stephanie Fernandez came together to organize a flag football tournament to raise money for this special charity. Before the tournament began, a young adult ambassador from TCA and current Gonzaga High School senior, Jack Guarino, spoke about his diagnosis of brain tumors his freshman year of high school. It was a tough time being in a children's hospital, where he was one of the oldest patients, and had a hard time relating to the princesses and stickers being passed around. Jack struggled through depression, as he felt alone in his battle having no one close in age to share his experiences with. Through TCA, Jack works with hospitals to obtain patient navigators, who counsel patients, can connect them with other people going through similar difficulties, and create areas in hospitals designated for teens and young adults to escape and have a bit of fun.
It was a beautiful day for fundraising and fun! A total of 11 teams were registered, and the competition factor was high. The winners of the boys division was team "Baggage Claim" - David Wallis, Devin Morrow, Jonathon Gensel, Ryan Barrett, Bradley Magee, Nick Rice, Nate Smith, and Jahmal Banks. The winners of the girls division was the team of Maggie Basse, Brianna Somers, Alex Lee, Carina Ritcheson, and Cameron Solomon.
The efforts of these O'Connell students shouldn't go unrecognized, as they raised $1,500 for Teenage Cancer America. What a great way to support your fellow teens and young adults, GO KNIGHTS!
