Homecoming is October 27-28, 2017We are celebrating our 60th Anniversary and we hope you will make plans to join us for a special Homecoming weekend:

  • Friday, Oct. 27 - Alumni Achievement Awards & Athletic Hall of Fame. Nominate an alum HERE.
  • Saturday, Oct. 28 - Mass of Remembrance - Remember your classmates and loved ones at a special Mass in the school chapel.
  • Saturday, Oct. 28 - Varsity Football Game & Alumni Tent - Enjoy an afternoon of O'Connell football and stop by the alumni tent inside the stadium for a special DJO commemorative gift for all alumni.

60 Hour Service Challenge - Over 3,000 hours have already been pledged! In honor of Bishop O'Connell High School's 60th Anniversary, we invite all members of the O'Connell family (students, alumni, parents, faculty members, and friends) to pledge 60 hours of service to their neighborhood, to their community, to their church, to those in need. Hall of Fame Educator 


William Evinger '61 has been selected for induction into the Wakefield High School Hall of Fame. An Arlington County teacher for over 30 years (with 20 years at Wakefield), Evinger was the Social Studies Chair and a master teacher, wrote and edited nine books and various publications; and consulted with the National Geographic Society on several film series, the GED Testing Service, and Houghton Mifflin textbook publisher. Alumnus Receives Ethics Award


Congratulations to O'Connell alumnus and Board of Governors Chairman, John Brough '82, who was honored this week with the Leadership Legacy Ethics Award by Arlington's Center for Leadership Excellence. Brough is Chief Executive Officer and Director of Chain Bridge Bank in McLean and is active in community, charitable and professional organizations. He currently serves on the board of trustees of the Virginia Banker's Association, School of Bank Management; the board of directors of the Greater McLean Chamber of Commerce. He and his wife, Karin, are also the parents of Joseph '14, Peter '16 and Virginia '18. Find out more...


   Mount St. Mary's Hall of Famer


Stephen Long '82 was inducted early this year into the Mount St. Mary's University Athletic Hall of Fame. He was recognized for his outstanding achievements in track and field. As a two-time NCAA Division II qualifier in both the pole vault and 4x400 relay, Long graduated in 1986 as one of the Mount's most prolific track and field athletes. He played a part in several program records, including three that still stand today in the shuttle hurdles relay and the seven and eight-man decathlons. View his induction speech...



   Book Signing This Weekend


Fr. Thomas Cavanaugh '99, Parochial Vicar at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Ashburn, has recently co-authored the book "How to Win Friends for Christ One Conversation at a Time."


He will be available at a book signing event on Sunday, May 28 (2-4 p.m.) at Trinity House Cafe in Leesburg. Get the details here...


   Alum Featured in Media Nuns' Video


Allison Gliot '12 began her postulant year with the Daughters of St. Paul (the media nuns) in St. Louis earlier this year. She is one of several postulants featured in a recent Daughters of St. Paul video.

  Q&A With Creative Young Alum


Zane Bevan '13 says he makes a living playing with shapes and colors. As the creative director at Robinhood in Palo Alto, Calif., he leads the creative design team for an online stock trading app. Bevan was recently the focus of a Q&A feature in the online design industry magazine, Design Milk. Read more...


  Softball Team Wins WCAC and State Titles


Congratulations to the 2017 O'Connell softball team, who brought home all the hardware this year. The Lady Knights finished the season with a perfect 27-0 record, ranked #1 in the Washington Post and #3 in the nation in the USA Today Super 25 rankings.




   O'Connell Singers On Stage with Eric Church


Bishop O'Connell choir members joined country singer Eric Church on stage during his recent stop in Washington, D.C. on his "Holdin' My Own" tour. Church has made it a point to invite a local school chorus to help him with the background vocals for the opening number in each city. For these O'Connell students, it was quite a day to remember!




Students Explore Black Catholic History


O'Connell religion teacher, David Owens, organized two field trips to visit historic African-American Catholic churches in our area. The first trip took approximately 150 students to Washington, D.C. to learn more about Holy Comforter–St. Cyprian, St. Teresa of Avila and Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Earlier this month, another group of students traveled to Baltimore for presentations at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Mary's Seminary and Our Lady of Mount Providence Convent. Read more...
