Knights Hockey - WCAC Finalists

Finishing the regular season with a 5-5-0 record in the WCAC, O'Connell's ice hockey team entered the league tournament as the #3 seed. The Knights defeated Good Counsel in the quarter-finals last Tuesday by a score of 7-3, before facing the Washington Post #1 ranked Gonzaga Wednesday in a semi-final game.

With the Eagles leading for most of the game, freshman Michael Crespy scored the game tying goal with 42 seconds left in the game, forcing overtime play. After the five-minute sudden-death overtime period, the score remained 4-4. It took four rounds of a shootout to settle the game, with sophomore goalie Jack Mackinnon playing solid in net. It was sophomore Patrick Donnelly who scored the game winner for O'Connell…Knights win, 5-4! You can view the final moments thanks to DCSportsFan HERE.

O'Connell squared off on Thursday in the championship game against a talented DeMatha team. The Knights played a tough game, but fell to DeMatha, 3-1. The best is yet to come for Knights hockey. With a roster of 15 freshmen and sophomores, two juniors and two seniors the team continues to be a force in DC-area high school hockey.

Figure Skater Qualifies for Nationals

The latest DJO talent discovery is sophomore synchronized skater, Nicole Berry. She has been skating with the DC EDGE Synchronized Skating program for the past five years, and her team is one of 13 novice-level teams (consisting of skaters 16 or younger) from around the country that recently qualified at sectional competitions to compete at the U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships in Rockford, Ill. on Feb. 22-25.

Nicole wakes up at 4:30 a.m. for individual practice before school. She studies and practices in the various ice skating disciplines--moves in the field, ice dance, and freestyle. She also practices with her team two to three times a week perfecting their steps and endurance. Congratulations Nicole and good luck, DC EDGE!

Supporting The Gayant Family

The O'Connell basketball program continues to rally around the Gayant family - a military family recently profiled in the news. The O'Connell community has raised over $1,000 in baby supplies and money for the Gayant family and their brand new quadruplets. A special shout out to the JV basketball families who contributed over $600. Your support is very appreciated for this deserving military family.
