Ambassador Returns to His Alma Mater


James Nealon '73 recently returned to O'Connell as a special guest speaker for the Global Studies program. As the U.S. Ambassador to Honduras, Nealon shared his experiences in foreign service with the group of more than 50 students who had gathered for this special after-school event. Read more...

Please pray for Allison Gliot '12 who is joyfully joining the Daughters of St. Paul--the "media nuns." Gliot is a recent graduate of Catholic University. She will begin her postulancy in St. Louis next year.

   College Student Meets Pope Francis


Maggie McLellan '15 was one of two student delegates from Canada attending a recent world congress on pastoral care for international students held at the Vatican. Although they anticipated perhaps a group meeting with the Pope, the two were thrilled to be able to have a personal conversation, where they presented artwork and a book of messages and blessings from their school community. McLellan is a second year student at Brescia University College in Ontario. Read more…

   Youth Ministry Award


At this year's diocesan Youth and Campus Ministry Appreciation Dinner, Stephanie Salinas '16 was presented the "Blessed Chiara Badano" Award by Bishop Michael Burbidge. Salinas was nominated by St. Ann Parish not just for her dedication to their youth ministry program over the past three years, but for her commitment to her relationship with Christ. "Stephanie shares Christ with everyone she encounters," her nomination read. "She has allowed her life experiences to amplify opportunities for encounter - with others and with Christ Himself." Salinas shares her personal journey and her battle with cancer in this video…

   Grammy Nomination


Congratulations to Jim Shirey '07 on his recent Grammy nomination. Yes, you are reading that correctly! Shirey wrote two songs on the O'Connor Band album, "Coming Home," which has been nominated for best blue grass album.  When he's not songwriting, Shirey teaches social studies and music at Bishop O'Connell. Be sure to follow the Grammy awards this February!

   New Book Published


Jake McGuire '68 is known for his iconic photographs of local landmarks and monuments. He recently published a compilation of some of his favorites, called "Washington, DC: A Little Square Picture Book." He will be showcasing on Saturday, Dec. 24, from 7-9 a.m. at the Starbucks at Lyon Village. Find out more...

Katie Boehm '17 was highlighted by ABC7 News in their "Rising Star" feature. Boehm shared her personal struggles with bulimia, and her hopes to make a difference in the lives of others.

   Teacher Named to Arlington's 40 Under 40 List


O'Connell English teacher, John Meehan, was recognized by the Arlington Leadership Center for Excellence as one of this year's "40 Under 40" honorees. In addition to his role in the classroom, Meehan serves as the coordinator of the school's "igKnight" teacher professional development program. He has presented his work at numerous national conferences, and was also recently appointment to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's 2016-2018 Teacher Advisory Council. Read more...

JJ LaPointe '13 (pictured) helped his Christopher Newport University cross country team earn 11th place at the NCAA championship with his top 60 finish. Read more…


Joe Brough '14, former O'Connell cross country runner, ran his first ever marathon on Nov. 20 of this year. He crossed the finish line at the Potomac River Run Marathon in Washington, D.C. in first place. His time of 2:36:41 (5:55 mile pace) also qualified him for the Boston Marathon. Brough is currently in his third year at the U.S. Naval Academy.
